The Scoop On...Intuitive Kids

You've heard of mother's intuition - that innate ability we have to know when our kids need us and exactly what they need. It's a pretty awesome super power and helps in all kinds of situations if we listen to and trust that still, small voice inside. My first-grader is always flabbergasted that I just "know" little things about him, whether it's that he's hiding behind the door or didn't eat his vegetables at school. I just have a sense of it, and usually I'm right.

But we moms aren't the only ones with strong intuition; our kids have it, too!  Has your child ever said out loud the very thing you were thinking? Or maybe your child has mentioned someone's name and suddenly that person calls or knocks on the door. Kids usually think nothing of it - we're the ones who are shocked when something like that happens.

But some kids have especially sensitive radar, picking up on the unseen world around them. Perhaps you've already run across some books, news stories or TV shows about the increasing number of kids who report hearing and/or seeing spirits, having premonitions, even remembering past lives or family events that occured before they were born. It's amazing and exciting to see all of the resources coming out related to this topic. If you want to help your child feel secure about his or her intuitive abilities (and learn to understand them better yourself), check out these great books, shows and more!

Kids With Gifts: Renowned psychic medium Lisa Williams created a web site specifically to provide information and reassurance to kids with intuitive gifts because she wished she'd had something similar when she was young.

Psychic Kids: This A&E TV show is not for kids, but parents can gain insights into what their children may be experiencing. I wish the show didn't make these kids' psychic abilities seem so scary early on in each episode, but after meeting with well-known psychic Chip Coffey and a licensed psychologist, most of the kids feel much more comfortable with their gifts by each show's end.

Children with a Sixth Sense: This iParenting article takes an in-depth look at intuitive kids.
